Barrys Bay Cheese

Barrys Bay Cheese, nestled on the shores of the Akaroa Harbour was originally one of nine dairy factories dotted along Banks Peninsula, allowing early settlers a means to preserve their milk. Today, more than 120 years later, Barrys Bay Cheese is the last operating factory, and we continue to source our milk locally from Banks Peninsula to make handcrafted cheese using the same traditional recipes and methods. Our factory, located 15 minutes outside of Akaroa, is heavily visited over the summer months and the large viewing window in our shop attracts cheese lovers and curious consumers alike to experience the careful craft behind each block and wheel of cheese we produce.

This year, we have collaborated with two other local producers, to celebrate the wonderful food of Banks Peninsula. Our Cacao Nib Havarti, a co-creation with She Universe, is a wonderful celebration of our mild and creamy Havarti sprinkled with perfectly roasted cacao nibs – an absolute treat paired with red wine or dark beer! Our Wakame Kelp Havarti is our same great Havarti dusted with flakes of the sea salted superfood, Wakame, from local company, NZ Kelp.
