Satisfy your sweet tooth with fluffy scone-like dumplings smothered in a rich golden-syrup sauce. This easy-to-make, comforting dessert is beloved by generations.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups self-raising flour
- 1/4 cup Woolworths vanilla-flavoured custard powder
- 140g salted butter, chilled, chopped
- 1/3 cup caster sugar
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup golden syrup
- 1/4 tsp pure icing sugar (to dust)
- 1 cup thickened cream (to serve)
Method
- Combine flour and custard powder in a large bowl. Use fingertips to rub 60g butter into flour mixture until fine crumbs form. Stir in caster sugar. Make a well in centre of mixture. Pour in milk. Use a flat-bladed knife to mix until just combined.
- Place brown sugar, golden syrup, remaining butter and 2 cups water in a large (24cm base) saucepan. Stir over low heat until butter has melted and mixture is well combined.
- To make each dumpling, spoon 1 tbs dough into syrup sauce. Repeat to make 18 dumplings. Cover and simmer over low heat for 15 minutes or until a skewer inserted into dumpling centre comes out clean.
- Divide dumplings among serving bowls. Spoon syrup sauce over dumplings. Dust lightly with icing sugar. Serve with cream.
